Bend the top of the coat hanger enough for it to clamp down firmly onto the blade of the ceiling fan. For a greater diameter you can move the hangers to ends of the fan blades, which will also be even more sturdy because the yarn won't move the hangers in towards the center when you get greater tension on them while winding the yarn.
By the way...we do have a low ceiling! Only 8 ft.
